CBD/Hemp

WHAT IS CBD/HEMP OIL AND IS IT LEGAL?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a therapeutic, non-hallucinogenic component of the marijuana plant and the hemp plant (THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the hallucinogenic component). Industrial hemp which contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight is legal and considered a food in all 50 states; CBD derived from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC is therefore also legal.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD AND HEMP OIL?

CBD is one of the primary phytocannabinoids (plant cannabinoids) in hemp. Along with CBD, there are numerous other phytocannabinoids, flavinoids, and terpenes, all of which work together synergistically to promote health. Hemp oil is simply oil derived from the hemp plant, so technically any CBD oil can be called hemp oil, and a lot of companies producing CBD oils (extractions) will label their products as hemp oil. When CBD is extracted from the plant, however (either as an isolate or in combination with other components of the plant, i.e., "full spectrum"), it is not truly a full plant product, regardless of how it is labeled.

Hemp oil as a full plant product has a much more profound effect on the body than just CBD oil because it is using all of the components of the plant in the proportions nature intended. As far as we know, Functional Remedies is the only major hemp oil company that actually infuses its hemp, creating a truly full spectrum product. In fact, its effects bear this out; in third-party testing it has repeatedly been shown to be more potent than other top brands of CBD/"hemp" oil.

HOW DO CBD AND THE OTHER PARTS OF HEMP WORK?

CBD, one of the primary cannabinoids in hemp, is best known for its ability to reduce every type of inflammation. It works by modulating the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a master regulatory system in the body that enables two-way communication between body systems. ECS receptor sites are found in most cells in the body, including the brain, connective tissue, glands, and organs. The function of the ECS is to restore the body’s homeostasis (internal balance) so that all of your systems (particularly your immune system, nervous system, and endocrine system) can function optimally.

Most of us have pretty damaged endocannabinoid systems, partly from environment, partly from lack of good nutrients (including hemp), partly from stress and other factors. When you start taking hemp oil, it begins a repair process for your ECS so that it can start bringing your body back to a homeostatic state where it can function optimally. And once you get to a maintenance serving, hemp oil is great for prevention; the longer someone takes it, the deeper it works, going to work at the level of the nucleus and the mitochondria (the powerhouses of the cell, where energy is produced).

CBD also works in the body outside the endocannabinoid system as well, including regulating body temperature and perceptions of pain and inflammation; activating receptors that affect anxiety and mood; and raising levels of transporter molecules in the nervous system.

In addition to CBD, hemp is full of other phytocannabinoids, flavinoids, terpenes, which offer a variety of antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and other health-supporting benefits for the body and mind.

WHAT IS THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT?

While we spend a lot of time talking and hearing about CBD, its real power lies not just in its own work in the endocannabinoid system but in the way it works together with all the other components of the hemp plant, including THC, along with other terpenes, flavonoids, and phytocannabinoids present in the plant. This synergistic effect is called the entourage effect. It is most significant in an infusion product as opposed to an extraction product.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS? CBD/hemp oil has not been shown to cause any side effects at normal recommended serving sizes. Some people at high serving sizes may experience side effects from CBD/hemp oil potentiating (making stronger) the side effects of prescription drugs they may be taking; when this happens, it is usually experienced as fatigue. CBD has no negative effects in terms of toxicity.

NOT ALL CBD/HEMP OIL IS CREATED EQUAL!!!

Hemp is what is known as a soil remediator, meaning that its job in the environment is to pull toxins (pesticides, herbicides, etc.) out of the soil. It’s therefore crucial that you know where the hemp that produced your oil was grown and whether it is “clean” or not. In addition, a lot of companies use harmful extraction methods, including heat and chemicals, which damage the CBD molecule, impacting their effect and introducing potentially harmful molecules into your body.

The oils we distribute are of the highest quality. Both Functional Remedies' and Elixinol's oils are made from 100% organic, non-GMO Colorado hemp and are tested for the highest purity and potency. Please see our Products page for more information on these two companies.

WILL CBD SHOW UP ON A DRUG TEST:

Because of the other cannabinoids present in hemp, CBD/hemp oil can very occasionally yield a false positive on a drug test. Certificates of Analysis, available for all our products, offer a breakdown of the CBD and THC content (always below the legal limit of 0.3% THC) of the individual product.
